Smart Meter Installation Sydney

A smart meter is a digital electricity meter that records consumption in real time and reports it remotely to your retailer. In NSW, smart meter installation is network metering work, so it must be performed by a Level 2 Accredited Service Provider (ASP). DM Electrical installs and changes over smart meters across Sydney's Northern Beaches, North Shore, Inner West, Eastern Suburbs, and CBD, for homes, solar feed-in, time-of-use billing, and multi-tenant sites.

A smart meter changeover is needed when upgrading from a legacy accumulation meter, when a retailer requests a digital meter, when commissioning solar feed-in, or when switching to time-of-use billing. DM Electrical's Level 2 ASP credential covers the full job, the physical meter installation, the metering registration with the network, and the solar feed-in setup where required, so you are not handed between two contractors to get one meter installed.

Smart Metering Services

  • Type 4 and Type 5 meter installation. Remotely read interval (smart) meters and manually read interval meters installed and registered with the network.
  • Legacy to smart meter changeover. Swapping out old accumulation meters for compliant digital meters, including retailer-coordinated changeovers.
  • Solar feed-in metering. Meters capable of recording export, installed and registered so your feed-in tariff is credited correctly.
  • Time-of-use meter setup. Metering configured for time-of-use billing so off-peak and shoulder rates are recorded accurately.
  • Multi-tenant and embedded network metering. Metering for apartments, strata, and embedded networks where multiple meters sit behind one connection.
  • Meter board and supply checks. Where the existing board or consumer mains cannot safely take the new meter, we identify and quote the upgrade up front.

Our Process

  1. 1
Confirm the path. We check whether the changeover runs through your retailer or directly with us, and confirm the meter type required.
  2. 2
Site check and quote. We inspect the meter board and supply, flag any board or consumer mains work, and quote a fixed price.
  3. 3
Install and changeover. The meter is swapped, usually within one to two hours, with a brief planned supply interruption.
  4. 4
Registration and feed-in setup. We register the meter with the network and complete any solar feed-in or time-of-use configuration.

Why DM Electrical

  • Level 2 ASP in-house. The metering work and any supply upgrade are done under the one job, not split across contractors.
  • Solar-ready. Feed-in metering and registration handled end to end so your export is credited from day one.
  • Clear on the paperwork. Retailer coordination, network registration, and compliance documentation managed for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a smart meter for solar?

Yes. A solar feed-in tariff requires a digital smart meter capable of recording export to the grid. DM Electrical handles both the meter changeover and the grid feed-in registration so your export is credited correctly.

How long does a smart meter install take?

A standard residential changeover takes one to two hours on site once the retailer has authorised the swap. Multi-tenant and embedded network installs take longer depending on the number of meters.

Will I lose power during the changeover?

Power is briefly interrupted while the meter is swapped, typically for 10 to 30 minutes. We let you know before isolating supply so you can shut down sensitive equipment.

Who can legally install a smart meter in NSW?

Smart meter installation in NSW is network metering work and must be carried out by a Level 2 Accredited Service Provider (ASP). DM Electrical holds the Level 2 ASP credential covering the full installation and metering registration.

Do I arrange the meter, or do you?

It depends on the job. Retailer-driven changeovers are usually coordinated through your energy retailer, while new connections, supply upgrades, and solar installs are typically arranged directly with us. We confirm the correct path before booking the work.

What is the difference between a Type 4 and Type 5 meter?

A Type 4 meter is a remotely read interval (smart) meter that reports consumption automatically to the retailer. A Type 5 meter is an interval meter that is read manually. We install both and advise which suits your connection and billing.
