Most people book a switchboard upgrade for one of three reasons. The board still runs old ceramic rewireable fuses with no safety switches, so it is both unsafe and non-compliant. It trips constantly because it is full and undersized for the modern load of air conditioning, induction cooktops, and an EV charger. Or a renovation, a smart meter, or a new EV charger cannot go ahead until the board is brought up to standard. Common signs are ceramic rewireable fuses instead of circuit breakers, no RCD safety switches, a board that trips whenever you run several appliances, flickering lights, a burning smell or scorch marks at the board, or being told the board is too old to add an EV charger, air conditioner, or a smart meter. Any of these is worth a switchboard inspection.
Most single-phase upgrades take 4 to 6 hours, including a planned power outage while the board is changed over. Three-phase boards or jobs that also renew the consumer mains can take a full day. We agree the outage window with you in advance so it does not interrupt a workday or a tenant.
The board itself can be upgraded by a licensed electrician, but if the job also touches the consumer mains, the service connection, or the meter, it needs a Level 2 ASP. DM Electrical holds Level 2 ASP authority, so the whole job, including any network disconnection and reconnection, is done by one team rather than two contractors.
NSW requires RCD protection on power and lighting circuits, and it is mandatory to bring circuits up to standard when a switchboard is upgraded or when a property has significant electrical work done. A modern upgrade fits RCBOs or RCDs across the board so every circuit is protected.
Yes. Adding an EV charger is one of the most common reasons a board needs upgrading, because the charger needs its own protected circuit and the existing board is often full or lacks RCD protection. We size the board and consumer mains for the charger load and install both under the one job.
