Switchboard surge protection is a surge diverter fitted inside your switchboard that clamps sudden voltage spikes and sends the excess energy to earth before it reaches your wiring. It protects every circuit in the property at once, unlike a plug-in surge board that only protects what is plugged into it. A licensed electrician installs it.
Most people think about surges only after something has died. Here is what causes them, what a diverter does about it, what it costs, and when it is not worth fitting.
What causes a power surge?
Most surges do not come from lightning, they come from the grid and from your own appliances. A surge is a voltage spike well above the 230 volts your installation is designed for. It can last microseconds and still break an appliance. The common sources:
- Network switching. When the distributor moves load between feeders, the change can push a spike down the street.
- Storms. A strike does not have to hit your roof. One near the overhead network induces a surge that travels the line into every property on it.
- Large motors cycling. Air conditioning compressors and pool pumps spike each time they stop and start, including your neighbour's.
- Supply faults and blackout restoration. A damaged service line can deliver a brief overvoltage, and the moment power returns is a common time for equipment to fail.
The everyday sources are small and repeated. They rarely kill an appliance outright, they shorten its life over years, which is why the damage gets blamed on the appliance.
What is a surge diverter?
A surge diverter is a protective device mounted on the DIN rail in your switchboard, alongside your circuit breakers. At normal voltage it does nothing. When voltage jumps above its threshold, the components inside turn from insulator to conductor in a fraction of a microsecond, sending the excess to earth rather than through your appliances.
Two consequences follow, and both matter more than the brand:
- It is only as good as your earth. If the earthing at your switchboard is undersized or corroded, the device cannot do its job, so the earth gets checked during the install.
- It wears out. Every spike absorbed uses a little of its capacity. Most units carry a status window, green while healthy and red once expired.
It also needs room. If your board is full, or still has ceramic fuses, a switchboard upgrade comes first.
Surge protection devices compared
Australian Standards sort surge protective devices into three types by where they sit and how much energy they take. They are layers rather than alternatives, and a home benefits most from the middle one.

The gap worth understanding is what a plug-in board cannot reach. Your oven, air conditioning, solar inverter, hot water system, lighting, and smoke alarms are hardwired. Nothing plugged into a wall socket protects them.
Do I need surge protection at my switchboard?
It is worth fitting when what you are protecting costs far more than the device, which is now true in most homes. The sums changed once solar inverters, ducted air conditioning, and EV chargers became normal, all of them expensive and hardwired. Clear cases:
- You have solar, a battery, or an EV charger. Inverters are among the most surge-sensitive items in a house.
- You are on overhead supply, which picks up induced surges far more readily than underground.
- You run a business or home office where downtime costs money.
- You have already lost appliances to a storm, which usually means your supply is exposed.
- Your board is being upgraded anyway, so the labour is paid for.
Lower value: a small unit on underground supply with no solar and little fixed equipment. If your board trips for no obvious reason or has no RCD protection, fix that first. Surge protection is a refinement, not a substitute for a safe board.

What does switchboard surge protection cost?
Fitting a Type 2 diverter to a board with spare room is a short job, so most of the cost is the device. These are general Sydney ranges, not a quote.
- Type 2 diverter, supplied and fitted to a board with spare space: typically $350 to $800, depending on the rating and the state of the earthing.
- Where the board is full or non-compliant: add the switchboard upgrade it needs first, typically $1,500 to $3,500 for a single-phase home.
- Three-phase installations: higher again, because all three phases need protecting.
- Plug-in surge boards: typically $30 to $150 at retail, worth having behind a television.
Set that against the price of one solar inverter and the cost is easy to justify.
What surge protection will not do
A surge diverter handles brief spikes, not sustained overvoltage. The fault most often confused with a surge is a lost or broken neutral, where voltage on some circuits climbs and stays there for minutes rather than microseconds. That destroys appliances across the house, and a diverter cannot hold it back. The fault has to be found and repaired.
Signs of a supply fault rather than a surge: lights brightening and dimming together, appliances failing in groups, or part of the property losing power while the rest stays on. That is Level 2 network territory and it is urgent. Call an emergency electrician.
A diverter also does nothing for a blackout, and does not protect the data and phone lines entering the property.
Frequently asked questions
Is surge protection required by law in Australia?
No. The wiring rules do not make surge protection mandatory in a standard home, so a switchboard without a surge diverter is still compliant. It is an optional upgrade, not a legal requirement. It comes closest to essential on a property with expensive fixed equipment, such as a solar inverter, ducted air conditioning, or a lift.
Can I install a surge diverter myself?
No. A surge diverter wires into the live side of your switchboard and has to be connected to the main earth to work at all, so it is licensed electrical work in NSW. A licensed electrician also issues the compliance certificate. Fitting one yourself is illegal and would likely void your insurance.
How long does a surge diverter last?
It depends on how many surges it absorbs rather than on age. The internal components wear a little each time they clamp a spike, which is why most diverters have a status window showing green while the device is healthy and red once it has expired. Have it checked whenever an electrician is at the board.
Will a surge diverter protect my house from a lightning strike?
It reduces damage from nearby strikes and from surges travelling down the network afterwards, which is the common case. A direct strike on the building is different: the energy can exceed what any single device is rated to handle. Surge protection lowers the risk, it does not remove it.

For a home with solar, air conditioning, or an EV charger it is good value. For a small unit it is optional, and honest advice will say so.
