Your consumer mains are the cable running from the point of attachment to your main switch. They need upgrading when they are too small, or too old and perished to carry the load safely. Most Sydney homes need one when a switchboard upgrade, EV charger, or three-phase supply pushes demand past what the existing cable is rated for.
It is the part of the job most people never hear about until it lands on a quote. Here is how to tell whether yours are due.
What are consumer mains, exactly?
Consumer mains are the conductors between the point of supply and your main switchboard. On an overhead connection that is the cable from the point of attachment on your fascia or private pole, down the wall and into the meter box. On an underground connection it runs from the street pillar or pit, through conduit, to the same place.
Unlike the rest of your wiring, this cable is unprotected for most of its length, because the main switch that protects it sits at the far end. It also belongs to you, not the network, from the point of attachment onwards. That is why only an accredited Level 2 ASP may work on it.
How do I know if my consumer mains are undersized?
You usually cannot tell by looking, and it takes a maximum demand calculation to be certain. What puts a house on the list:
- The house was built or last rewired before the 1980s and still has its original mains. Cable sizes that were normal then do not cover today's cooking, air conditioning and car charging.
- The insulation is rubber, fabric-braided, or lead-sheathed. Old rubber mains go brittle and crack at the terminations, and they are one of the most common reasons Ausgrid issues a defect.
- Lights dim noticeably when the oven, kettle or air conditioner starts. That is voltage drop, and undersized mains are a frequent cause. AS/NZS 3000 allows no more than 5 per cent from the point of supply to the point of use.
- An electrician has told you the board cannot take another circuit, or a metering contractor has knocked back a job because the supply was not up to standard.

What size consumer mains do I need?
The size comes from a maximum demand calculation, not a rule of thumb. A Level 2 ASP works out the load your property draws under AS/NZS 3000, then sizes the cable for that load, the run length and the installation method. The combinations below are the ones we fit most often on Sydney homes, as a guide only.

Long runs change the answer. A 40 metre cable to a house set back from the street often needs a size up on voltage drop alone.
What triggers a consumer mains upgrade?
Most consumer mains get replaced because another job forced it, not because the owner went looking. The usual triggers across the Northern Beaches and North Shore:
- A switchboard upgrade. The new board is rated well above the cable feeding it, so the mains have to match. See switchboard upgrades for that side of the job.
- An EV charger. A 7 kW charger runs at about 32 amps for hours at a time, a bigger change to your maximum demand than most appliances. Our EV charger installation page covers how the supply is assessed.
- Going to three phase. A phase conversion replaces the mains as part of the work. Our guide on three-phase power covers when it is worth it.
- A smart meter changeover that gets rejected. The retailer's metering contractor will not install onto a non-compliant supply, and they leave without doing the job.

What does the job actually involve?
A consumer mains replacement is network work, so it runs to Ausgrid's process rather than a normal electrician's. The steps:
- On-site assessment. We check the cable, its route, the point of attachment, the meter and the switchboard, then calculate the demand and confirm the size needed.
- Network notification. The job is notified to Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy beforehand and lodged against your address.
- Planned outage. The supply is disconnected at the point of attachment or the pillar, with the meter seal broken by the ASP. We agree the window in advance.
- The new cable is run. Overhead work usually reuses the existing path. Underground means trenching and conduit, which is why it costs more. We do full overhead-to-underground conversions too, as on our Church Point undergrounding project.
- Termination, reconnection and reseal, then a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work is issued and the notification closed out. That paperwork is what keeps the connection recognised.
What does a consumer mains upgrade cost in Sydney?
Done alongside a switchboard upgrade, the mains typically add $1,000 to $2,500 to the job. As a standalone replacement it is quoted on site, because the price is driven by things that vary house to house. The main ones:
- Cable run length. Longer runs mean more cable and often a larger size.
- Overhead or underground. Underground is almost always dearer, because of the trenching and conduit.
- Whether the existing path can be reused, or a new route has to be cut through eaves, walls or landscaping.
- Whether the point of attachment or private pole also needs work, which often fails inspection at the same time.
- Access constraints, including heritage properties and strata common property.
Treat those as general ranges, not a quote. An accurate number needs someone on site looking at the cable.
Frequently asked questions
Can a regular electrician replace consumer mains?
No. Consumer mains sit on the network side of the meter, so only an accredited Level 2 ASP can legally work on them. A standard licensed electrician can wire everything inside the property, but cannot break the meter seal, disconnect the supply, or alter the cable between the point of attachment and the main switch.
How long does a consumer mains upgrade take?
Most single-phase replacements are a one-day job, including the planned outage while the supply is off. Long runs, underground work, and jobs done alongside a switchboard change take longer. We agree the outage window before the day so nobody is caught without power.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade at the same time?
Often, yes. The two jobs share the same outage and the same access, so doing them together costs less than doing them a year apart. A board full of ceramic fuses is also usually fed by mains of the same age, so the reason behind one tends to apply to the other.
Will my consumer mains need upgrading for an EV charger?
Sometimes. A 7 kW charger adds roughly 32 amps of continuous load, enough to push an older home past what its cable and main switch were sized for. A Level 2 ASP calculates the maximum demand with the charger included and tells you whether the mains carry it or need replacing first.
