If your main switch trips but every individual circuit breaker stays on, the fault sits upstream of the circuits rather than inside one of them. On most Sydney boards that means the main switch is itself an RCD covering everything, a shared neutral is leaking across circuits, or the problem is on the supply side.
That distinction changes who can fix it. A trip inside one circuit is ordinary electrician work. A main switch that will not hold is often a whole-of-installation or network-side problem, and part of that can only legally be touched by a Level 2 ASP.
What does it mean when the main switch trips but the breakers do not?
The device that opens tells you where the fault is. Each circuit breaker protects one circuit and opens when that circuit draws more current than it is rated for. The main switch sits above all of them and controls the whole installation. If it drops out while every breaker below it stays closed, the trip was not an overload on any single circuit.

Is your main switch actually an RCD?
On many older Sydney boards the main switch is an RCD protecting every circuit at once, not a plain isolator. A true isolator is a manual switch with no trip mechanism, so it cannot turn itself off. If yours keeps dropping to the off position, look at the front of it: an RCD has a test button and a milliamp rating printed on the body, usually 30mA or 100mA. That one device watches the earth leakage of the entire property. Small leaks on several circuits add up, and once the total crosses the threshold the whole house goes dark while every breaker stays exactly where it was. Newer boards split RCD protection across circuit groups so one fault only takes out part of the house.
Why a shared neutral trips the main switch and nothing else
A borrowed or shared neutral is the classic cause of a whole-board trip with no breaker movement. In older installations two circuits sometimes share one neutral conductor, often a leftover from a partial rewire or a circuit added later. Current returns along a path the RCD is not expecting, the device sees an imbalance between what went out and what came back, and it opens. The individual breakers only measure current on their own circuit, so they see nothing unusual and stay on. Damp cabling in a roof space does the same, and so does an ageing element in a hot water service or oven leaking a little to earth. None of it draws enough current to overload a circuit, which is exactly why the breakers stay put while the RCD lets go.
Could it be load rather than a fault?
Some main switches are main circuit breakers, and those trip on total load. A board fitted with a main circuit breaker has a rating for the whole installation, commonly 63A or 80A on a single-phase home. Every circuit can sit under its own limit while the combined draw pushes past the main. That is why the trip often lands the moment the oven, air conditioner, hot water, and an EV charger overlap. Nothing is faulty here; the installation has simply outgrown the supply it was built for, which is a question about your consumer mains and switchboard, and occasionally a case for three-phase power.
What if the power is off but nothing looks tripped?
If the power is out and every switch on the board is still up, the fault is almost certainly on the supply side. A failed service fuse, degraded consumer mains, or a fault at the point of attachment cuts your power without anything at the board moving. Half the property going dark while the other half keeps running is the strongest single clue, because it usually means one incoming conductor has failed. That is work on the network connection, so it belongs to a Level 2 ASP rather than a standard electrician, and we cover the symptoms in half the house losing power.

How do you narrow it down safely?
Work outward from the board, and stop the moment the main switch will not hold.
- Switch every circuit breaker off, then reset the main switch. If it holds, the fault is on one of the circuits.
- Bring the circuits back one at a time. The one that drops the main switch again is the circuit to investigate.
- If it will not hold even with every breaker off, stop. The fault is in the board, the consumer mains, or the supply, and none of that is safe to chase.

When is this a Level 2 job rather than a normal electrician's?
Once the fault is upstream of your switchboard, only an accredited Level 2 ASP can legally work on it. A licensed electrician can fault-find and repair the circuits inside your property. The service mains, the metering, the service fuse, and the connection at the point of attachment sit on the network side, and Ausgrid only recognises work done there by an accredited service provider. Why does my main switch trip but not the circuit breakers?

Does a main switch that keeps tripping mean I need a switchboard upgrade?
Often, yes. A single whole-of-board RCD, a full board with no spare ways, or a main rating the household has outgrown all cause the same trip to keep returning. Splitting the circuits across separate RCDs means one fault no longer takes out the whole property. A licensed electrician can tell you which applies after inspecting the board.
