What Is a Dedicated Circuit? (And What Needs One)

A dedicated circuit is a single cable run from your switchboard that feeds one appliance and nothing else, protected by its own circuit breaker. Ovens, air conditioners, electric hot water systems, EV chargers and pool pumps normally need one, because they draw too much current to share a circuit safely with power points and lights.

Electricians use the phrase constantly in quotes and compliance paperwork and almost never stop to explain it. Here is what it means in practice, which appliances in a Sydney home need one, and how to work out whether yours already has one.

What makes a circuit "dedicated"?

A circuit is dedicated when one appliance is the only thing connected to it. Most of your house runs on shared circuits instead. A typical three-bedroom home might have one circuit covering all the bedroom power points, another covering the living areas, and a lighting circuit spanning half the house. Plug in a toaster, a heater and a vacuum at once and all three draw through the same cable and the same breaker.

A dedicated circuit breaks that pattern. The cable runs from a breaker at the switchboard straight to one point and stops there. Nothing else taps into it, so the appliance gets the full rating of that circuit to itself and the breaker only ever protects one known load.

The cable is also sized for that specific appliance rather than for general use, and the breaker is rated to match. An oven circuit is heavier cable on a larger breaker than a bedroom power point circuit, because the oven asks for more.

Which appliances need a dedicated circuit?

As a rule, anything that draws heavy current for long stretches, or is hard-wired rather than plugged in, gets its own circuit. The AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules set the detail, and the exact requirement depends on the appliance rating and how the installation is arranged, but the pattern in most Sydney homes looks like this.

Smaller appliances share a general power circuit quite happily, even hungry ones like a kettle or a microwave. The difference is how long they run. A kettle pulls hard for two minutes. A ducted air conditioner pulls hard all afternoon.

How can I tell if an appliance already has one?

Open the switchboard cover and read the breaker labels. A board that has been done properly labels each circuit, and a dedicated circuit is normally named after the appliance it feeds: "Oven", "Aircon", "Hot Water", "Pool", "EV Charger". Shared circuits get general names instead, like "Power 1" or "Lights Upstairs".

If the labels are worn off, which is common on older boards, look at the appliance end instead. A hard-wired appliance with its own isolating switch on the wall beside it is almost always on a dedicated circuit. One plugged into an ordinary power point in a row of others usually is not.

Do not test it by flicking breakers off and on to see what dies. On a tired board that is a good way to find out which breaker was the last thing holding a worn circuit together. An electrician can identify and label every circuit properly as part of a residential electrical check.

What happens when a big appliance shares a circuit?

The circuit spends its life closer to its limit than it was designed for, and eventually the breaker does its job. Add an air conditioner to a general power circuit and the cable is fine until the day someone runs the kettle and the iron at the same time. Then the breaker opens, which is exactly what it is meant to do. Nothing has failed. The circuit is being asked for more than it was built to carry.

The quieter cost is heat. Cable running near its rating for hours warms up, and warm cable ages faster. Terminations work loose over years of heating and cooling, which is how a loading problem turns into a wiring problem.

Two things get mixed up here constantly. A circuit that trips when several things are running is a loading problem, and a dedicated circuit is the fix. What does adding a dedicated circuit involve?

Four things: a spare position at the switchboard, a cable route, the right protective device, and a compliance certificate at the end. The switchboard is usually what decides how big the job is.

  • A spare way at the board. Every breaker needs a physical slot. A modern board often has one or two free; an older one may not.
  • The cable run. Straightforward through an accessible roof space, much harder through a slab or a finished wall. This is what varies most between properties.
  • Protection sized to the load. Most new circuits go in on an RCBO, combining the overload breaker and the earth-leakage safety switch in one device. EV and pool circuits carry extra requirements.
  • A Certificate of Compliance. A new circuit is notifiable electrical work in NSW, so a licensed electrician tests it and issues a CCEW. Keep it; it matters at sale and for insurance.

A good electrician confirms the board can take the new load before quoting the cable run, rather than after. Done in that order, the quote holds.

What if the switchboard has no spare space?

Then the dedicated circuit becomes a switchboard job rather than a cabling job. This is the most common reason a simple-sounding request comes back as a bigger quote. Older boards run out of room quickly, particularly those still carrying ceramic rewireable fuses, which take up space without offering modern protection. The answer there is usually to replace the board rather than squeeze one more device in, which brings every circuit up to current standards at the same time. Frequently asked questions

Does an oven need a dedicated circuit?

In most cases yes. A standard electric oven draws enough on its own that sharing a general power circuit with other kitchen appliances would push it past its rating. Ovens are normally hard-wired to a dedicated circuit with an isolating switch nearby, and a separate cooktop usually gets its own circuit too. A benchtop oven that plugs into a power point is the exception.

Is a dedicated circuit the same as a dedicated power point?

Not quite. A dedicated circuit is the cable and breaker running from the switchboard to one appliance. A dedicated power point is a single outlet on the end of such a circuit, used where the appliance plugs in rather than being hard-wired. Every dedicated power point sits on a dedicated circuit, but many dedicated circuits have no power point at all because the appliance is wired straight in.

Can I add a dedicated circuit to my existing switchboard?

Usually, provided there is a spare position for the new breaker and the board is sound. An electrician checks the space, the condition of the board and whether your supply can carry the extra load before quoting. If the board is full or still uses ceramic rewireable fuses, replacing it is generally better value than modifying it.

How many appliances can share one circuit?

There is no single number, because it depends on what the appliances draw rather than how many there are. A general power circuit can serve a whole room of ordinary outlets, since they are rarely all in use at once. One air conditioner or oven can be too much for that same circuit on its own. The test is total current drawn at the same time, not the count of outlets.

Fitting one is usually the difference between an appliance that runs for twenty years without complaint and a circuit that trips every summer.
